Crocheting for the Spring

Now that the weather is getting warmer, it is time to adjust the kind of garments, accessories, and trinkets you’re making. No need for the huge wool scarves anymore (unless maybe, if you’re in New England…). Time to readjust! Here are some ideas, a gift from me to you!

1. Thin Scarves

These are some of my favourite things ever. You can vary the pattern in so many different ways that you can definitely make this one happen, no matter your level of crocheting expertise. You could even go the extra mile and add a tulip flower to the end of yours to really lean into this springtime theme.

2. Hand Warmers

And what better idea than to match your scarf to some comfy hand warmers? Now you can wear them without the fear of your fingertips freezing off. Let them be free! Again, this works for all skill levels. For the easiest kind, you can simply crochet a cylindrical shape and leave a hole for the thumb. Easy as that.

3. Granny Square Blanket

The reason why I include this one is that by the time you’re finished with it, it’ll probably be fall again. Also, whether you’re using it to stay warm or to decorate your couch, it looks fire.

4. Sweater Vest

Ah, the classic sweater vest. The perfect garment for spring. You get to keep your chest warm and your arms as cool as you! This one is a bit more time consuming, but there are so many variants. It’s just a question of panels.

5. Sleeves

If you’re making all these sleeveless garments, you better catch up in the crocheted sleeve department! This one is quick and easy, in my opinion, especially if you decide to make it fishnet. You’ll be able to feel the fresh spring air on your arms and all. I recommend mohair

6. Cat Ear Hat

This one is easy peasy, lemon squeezy. And it looks so awesome no matter the weather. Match the pattern with your other creations, a dangly string,. or you could turn it into a balaclava of sorts, like this person.

7. Hair Clips

On to non-clothing items. I’ve never made any of these myself, but they are just the most darling things. You can crochet a little flower, or maybe a bug of some sort if you’re dexterous with your hooks, and attach them to hair clips or barrettes. You will be walking around looking like spring itself.

8. Crossbody Bag

Of course, I won’t dictate what size you should make it, but here’s a suggestion: if you make it about the width of your preferred water bottle, it will become the most multifunctional little bag. Need to stay hydrated on a walk? You got it. Want a bag you can actually take to concerts and that fits your phone, wallet, etc? This will do wonders. Also it’ll shapeshift because it’s extra stretchy (and that’s why I recommend  making the strap much shorter than you’d think - it WILL become longer when stuff is in it… mark my words).

9. Tapestry

Okay last thing I’ll talk about – you can make your own grid of colors and create your very own spring tapestry. I recommend a bunny, maybe, or a huge flower. Or another bug to match your hair clips.

That is all! Creativity is defrosting, spring is springing and your new spring self is ready to be expressed! Get those hooks out and get crocheting already!
